#Learning Protocols

Description

This learning protocol encourages students to develop and evaluate an idea or proposition more deeply.

The 'Compass Points' thinking routine was developed by Project Zero, a research centre at the Harvard Graduate School of Education.

This learning activity is great for examining various facets of a proposition before students form an opinion. Each of the four compass points should push considerations to their limits to fully explore the idea.

E = Excited

Students write down what excites them about the idea or proposition, considering the positive aspects and potential benefits.

What opportunities does it present?

They share their thoughts with the group, highlighting the upside of the concept being discussed.

W = Worrisome

Students think critically about the idea or proposition. They write down any concerns or worries they have.

What are the potential downsides?

Students discuss these worries with the group, considering what could go wrong or what challenges may arise.

N = Need to Know

Students identify any gaps in their knowledge regarding the idea or proposition. Identifying questions they have or information they need to know to better understand it.

What additional details would help you evaluate the situation?

Once again students share their questions with the group to foster further discussion.

S = Stance or Suggestion for Moving Forward

After considering the excitement, worries, and information needed, students articulate their current stance on the idea or proposition. They identify their opinion about what could change, and make suggestions for moving forward.

How do you think the group should proceed in evaluating this idea?

Students discuss their stance with the group to see if perspectives have shifted after the discussion.
