The key strength of this routine lies in discussing why specific words, phrases, or sentences stood out to individuals, fostering deeper discussions.
It’s not necessary to complete all the steps, focusing on any two elements can still be effective.
You may also find it helpful to reverse the order of the steps, depending on the resource the students are engaging with. (eg. Sentence-Phrase-Word)
Step 1 - Word
Introduce the activity by explaining that students will identify a word from the text that resonates with them.
Ask students to think of a word that captured their attention or felt powerful. Encourage them to consider the impact of that word in the context of the text.
In small groups, have each student share their selected word, explaining why it stood out. Facilitate discussion, prompting classmates to respond and reflect on each word’s significance.
Step 2 - Phrase
After discussing the words, guide students to identify a phrase from the text that moved, engaged, or provoked them.
Encourage students to think about how this phrase connects to their feelings or ideas about the text.
In the same groups, students share their chosen phrases, discussing the reasons for their selection. Again, facilitate an approach that will ensure everyone has the opportunity to speak and engage.
Step 3 - Sentence
Transition to selecting a sentence that students feel captures the core idea of the text.
Remind them to consider how this sentence reflects the essence of the text or their understanding of its main message.
In groups, have students share their selected sentences and explain their importance. Facilitate a discussion that allows for exploration of different interpretations and insights.
