On how moral values change

FTLOG Interviews

Nicholas Wolterstorff says that human value is deeply embedded in Western culture.

Transcript

A culture doesn’t change its moral values all that quickly. Unless there’s some big crisis, some war or famine or something like that. But apart from that, it doesn’t change its moral values all that quickly. They’re deeply embedded in us human beings. They’re not just … it’s not just a matter of believing, but something like intuition, just a feeling. So given the treasuring of each and every human being that in my reading emerges out of Judaism and Christianity – given how deeply embedded that has become in the West and beyond the West, that’s not going to erode immediately. Maybe over the long haul, but not immediately.
