In today’s world, we value someone who has humility, we don’t like arrogance. In the ancient world, that was not the case. Our word “humiliation” is how they would have heard, back then, the word humility. It had no … humility had no positive ring to it in the ancient world, because it sounded like something that was shameful. And so when Jesus accepts death on a cross, he is challenging the Graeco-Roman structure of honour. And what he’s saying is that honour really should be given to all people, because all people are worthy of honour.
