On the direction of my life

FTLOG Interviews

Miroslav Volf ponders the nature of freedom, and choice.

Transcript

Yeah, freedom of choice … We all want it. We all appreciate it. If it’s not too much, you know. Sometimes I think that too, is that freedom of choice is too a crushing burden. But the most fundamental freedom isn’t which toothpaste I should use or what style I should dress in or whatever else of that sort we think in terms of freedom, or where I should go. The most fundamental freedom is the freedom that informs all of these choices, and that’s the freedom of the entire direction of my existence. And it’s that freedom – to align oneself with the purpose of one’s existence and then align all the choices, free choices, with that fundamental freedom – that’s what freedom, in the richer sense of the word, is. Otherwise I can exercise what looks like my freedom against myself. And I think the freedom to be who I am, who I truly am, is the most fundamental freedom.
